Often checked

Virtual shifting on the smart trainer you already have.

With Pro, BikeControl connects to your smart trainer and does the shifting itself. Your trainer app simply sees your trainer, so you get gears in any app, even one without virtual shifting of its own.

How BikeControl virtual shifting works
your smart trainer pairs with BikeControl. BikeControl shifts the gears and sets the trainer’s resistance for each one; your trainer app pairs BikeControl like any smart trainer. The minus and plus buttons try it out.
Your smart trainer

Pairs with BikeControl over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Each gear sets its resistance.

Your trainer app

Pairs BikeControl like any smart trainer. The overlay can show your gear on top.

Works with your smart trainer from Wahoo, Tacx, Elite and more.

Many more smart trainers will very likely work too; the trial is the quickest way to check yours.

All 28 confirmed trainers
  • Any trainer app. Including apps without virtual shifting of their own.
  • The same gears in every app you ride.
  • Goes with the gear overlay and heart rate, both also part of Pro.

How a shift feels: some trainers take the gear change directly and you feel it at once. On others BikeControl changes the resistance, and you feel the shift as fast as your trainer settles.

Shift Your App's Virtual Gears

Frequently asked questions

What is BikeControl, and why does it exist?
Many of the new generation trainers only support gear changes via virtual shifting, usually implemented by a Zwift Cog. With it, you often receive a Zwift Click device — a small hardware device that acts as a remote. BikeControl enables you to use it with any trainer app — and not only Zwift Clicks, but many other devices as well.
Can I trust BikeControl?
The App/Play Stores already include many security checks. What I can offer to earn your trust is that BikeControl's app code is public on GitHub (github.com/OpenBikeControl/bikecontrol), so you can see what the app does.
I don't have a controller device yet. Which one would you recommend?
I would advise against Zwift Click devices. They are proprietary and can stop working at any time. I sincerely hope Zwift changes its stance on this and makes its devices open and available for everyone.
What is OpenBikeControl?
BikeControl is part of OpenBikeControl - which is in the process of creating new and affordable controllers. Learn more at https://openbikecontrol.org/
Who is behind OpenBikeControl?
Jonas Acker, the developer of BikeControl

I'm Jonas Acker, and I build BikeControl. In March 2025 I wanted to ride other trainer apps with the Zwift Click I already had; the first version, then called SwiftControl, came out three days after my first commit. Working with the protocols in the indoor cycling ecosystem showed me how closed indoor cycling is, so I wrote OpenBikeControl: an open protocol that any trainer app or hardware maker can use. MyWhoosh, TrainingPeaks Virtual and Strappo have built it in. Behind both is OpenBikeControl UG, an independent company in Germany: the app is built in-house, and support is answered by the people who build it. More about me on the About page, and about the protocol at https://openbikecontrol.org/

Does using BikeControl break my trainer app's terms?
BikeControl doesn't modify, patch, or inject anything into your trainer app. It reads your controller over Bluetooth and sends the same standard inputs the app already accepts — keyboard, touch, or a normal Bluetooth controller. MyWhoosh, Rouvy and TrainingPeaks Virtual support BikeControl officially. For apps without an official integration, BikeControl is doing what a keyboard does.
